Job Description

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) is a researching solution for a climate-neutral society. Researchers develop and optimize efficient and inexpensive materials for solar cells, batteries and catalysts and operate the synchrotron radiation source BESSY II for an international user community. In addition, HZB also operates the Metrology Light Source in close cooperation with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt.
At the Institute for Accelerator Operation, Development and Technology, we are responsible for the reliable operation and continuous development of BESSY II and the MLS to provide our users with optimal research conditions for over 5000 hours per year. To this end, a team of over 100 technicians, engineers and researchers work together in a creative environment. In addition, we research new technologies, methods, and concepts for the further development of accelerator-based light sources and, in particular, develop concepts for the planned successor sources BESSY III and MLS2. Have we piqued your interest? Then we look forward to receiving your application!
Our Timing and Synchronization team is looking for qualified support to design, build and operate a modern digital timing system for the generation and distribution of high-precision synchronization signals down to the picosecond range. You will have access to an attractive working environment with state-of-the-art IT and measurement technology in an interdisciplinary team. Furthermore, you will participate in the international community and present our research and development successes both nationally and internationally.

Your Tasks

  • You will be responsible for the Configuration and operation of optical and electronic trigger distribution systems using the latest IT technology, based on mTCA 4.0 systems.
  • You will incorporate and integrate hardware components into the control and management system.
  • You will monitor the generation and distribution of RF signals for synchronization purposes.
  • You will supervise the setup, operation and further development of test environments for the characterization of timing and synchronization signals (e.g. phase noise, jitter, spectrum measurements).
  • You will evaluate and document measurement results, prepare internal and external presentations in workshops and present them at international conferences.
  • You will look after timing laboratories and equipment (e.g. regular calibration of components).

Your Profile

  • Completed technical studies (Bachelor/Master) in the fields of computer engineering, electrical engineering, high-frequency engineering or similar
  • Very good knowledge of hardware-related programming with C/C++ under Linux, ideally good knowledge of FPGA programming
  • Knowledge of data analysis and visualization (e.g. with Python)
  • Initial experience in the configuration and operation of mTCA 4.0 systems and the administration of Debian Linux systems is advantageous
  • Sound experience in dealing with measuring instruments in RF and communications technology desirable
  • German and English language skills at C1 level

Your Benefits

  • A job initially limited to 2 years with plenty of scope for professional and personal development
  • Responsible, future-oriented tasks in a wide range of technologies and measurement methods
  • Pay in accordance with TVöD-Bund according to your qualifications and company pension scheme
