Job Description

The Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Geneva is launching a call for applications for a position of 100% Assistant Professor in Seismology. The selected person will have to carry out research in the field of seismology applied to the study of geothermal systems, more particularly by using so-called passive seismic imaging methods. She will be responsible for coordination between the academic sector and industrial research partners. His other tasks include the organization of field measurement campaigns, the co-supervision of master’s and doctoral students, and the contribution to the management of the seismic instruments of the geophysics laboratory.

Title and skills required

We are looking for a candidate familiar with seismic imaging methods such as tomography using ambient noise, local seismicity as well as teleseisms at several scales (seismic exploration, tectonic and volcanic systems, etc.).

This individual will also be familiar with microseismicity monitoring techniques and will have experience in processing data from dense nodal arrays of geophones and DAS fiber optics in different geographic environments. She will also be able to demonstrate her practice of interpreting seismic tomography images in terms of geological and tectonic features. Well-established experience in projects funded by university-industry partnership, as well as prior knowledge specific to Switzerland (Jura, Molasse basin north of the Alps, etc.) are assets.

He/she will participate in the acquisition and processing of seismic data from dense nodal arrays of geophones for subsurface imaging. The project will require occasional fieldwork and participation in overseas team activities for several months. The successful candidate will develop the application of ambient noise tomography with surface waves at the local scale and participate in methodological developments for the extraction of body waves from ambient seismic noise. He/she will be called upon to obtain external research funds.

A background in physics and a doctorate in geophysics in the field of seismology and a record demonstrating the capacity for independent research are required. Postdoctoral experience, preferably outside the university where the person completed their thesis, is an advantage. The person will have to teach in French at the bachelor level. Therefore, proficiency in French demonstrated at the time of application is required.
