DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. The particle physics programme of DESY includes strong contributions to the LHC experiments at CERN and the preparation of future experiments. The experimental programme is enhanced by collaboration with a strong theory group. The DESY ATLAS group is involved in data analyses focusing on W and Z production, Higgs, top quark and Beyond Standard Model physics. In addition, the group is involved in the operation of the ATLAS detector and developments for future upgrades, such as the ATLAS silicon strip tracker for the High Luminosity LHC.
The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at University of Hamburg and DESY.
Doctoral research associates will become members of the Quantum Universe Research School (QURS), which provides academic and soft skills training, as well as career planning support. In addition, they will receive individual budgets to facilitate the attendance of summer schools and conferences, and to support other educational measures. Additional travel money for project-specific duties will be provided by the hosting research groups. Doctoral research associates may participate in the organization of the Cluster via an early career council.
About your role:
- Higgs and Dark Matter: Searches for rare decays of the Higgs boson and for axions
- Analysing LHC Run-3 data using machine learning methods, with focus on final states with leptons and photons
- Interpretation of existing measurements
- Authorship qualification task to be discussed with the candidate, possibilities in electron/photon performance and detector construction

About you:
- Master in physics, including courses on experimental particle physics
- Experience in data analysis
- Experience in programming (preferably C++ or Python)
- Team ability and very good English language skills

DESY in Hamburg does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with the University of Hamburg. Candidates for thesis research will have to satisfy the terms of admission for doctoral theses of the University of Hamburg. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 67% of the payment of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government).
