Job Description

DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

DESY is developing a new medical and industrial imaging method based on scattering of electrons in matter, which might provide several advantages over conventional X-ray imaging. This research project is supported by the DESY Generator Program (DGP) and aims at establishing this new method using linear electron accelerators with an energy up to a few hundred MeV and conventional silicon pixel detectors. The DGP supports DESY technologies with high application potential in reaching development milestones and launching them on the market. While initial proof-of-concept measurements have successfully been conducted already, DESY is looking for a post-doctoral researcher with a focus on device simulation and test beam integration of pixel detectors. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team working on new imaging methods with electrons and will have the unique opportunity to work closely with experts from the different fields of silicon detectors and electron accelerators, and in close collaboration with the department for Innovation & Technology Transfer.

About your role:

  • Monte Carlo Simulations for the optimization of the experimental setup and beam parameters
  • Development of a data acquisition system for silicon imaging detectors and integration with accelerators
  • Measurements at DESY accelerators and analysis/processing of imaging data
  • Strategic and conceptional work for the transfer of the technology to the market
  • Close collaboration with accelerator experts
  • Supervision of PhD students

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time and job-sharing. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a job ticket at both locations.

About you:

  • PhD in physics, mathematics or engineering or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in test beam instrumentation development and/or in silicon detector characterization and operation
  • Deep interest in imaging methods and detectors for medical applications, especially in silicon detectors
  • Outstanding teamwork abilities as well as excellent communication skills and knowledge of English
  • Technology-transfer focused mindset
  • Experience in interdisciplinary work and cooperation with scientific or industrial partners is an advantage
