The group MSK is responsible for the controls, feedback regulations and synchronization of the particle accelerators at DESY. We are an international team of technicians, engineers and scientists who develop, install and operate complex instruments for the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser, FLASH and PETRA.

About your role:

  • Development, extension and commissioning of the femtosecond-precise optical synchronization systems of the X-ray lasers FLASH and European XFEL
  • Optimization, operation and maintenance of existing installations
  • Integration, automation and transformation of new developments from the lab into the existing infrastructure of the particle accelerator and the scientific instruments
  • Documentation of the systems

About you:

  • Completed scientific higher education in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or comparable skills and experience, PhD is advantageous
  • Experience with Linux/UNIX, distributed systems and very good programming skills (C/C++, VHDL, Python)
  • Sound knowledge of analog and digital electronics, as well as integration of hardware, firmware and software
  • Substantial practical experience and physical/technical understanding
  • Experience of working at a large-scale research infrastructure beneficial
  • Self-motivated, problem solving-oriented way of work
  • Strong communication skills, both in spoken and written English
